   Pierre Zufferey
The painter Pierre Zufferey, originating from the Valaishas a predilection for large size works. In his spacious studio in Sierre, he paints with energy and impetuosity. His new series of paintings, entitled l’écume des jours » - evoking the book by the famous French writer Boris Vian -, is immediately leading us into the heart of the matter : black and white ; light, mystery ; space, infinite ; life.

After the Brasilian adventure of « Nuit Blanche »* at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sao Paulo with the sculptor and friend André Raboud at the beginning of this year, the exhibitions follow each other. The work is intense, developing, enriched by the various experiences. The evolution is striking. The majestic canvases of Nuit Blanche, loaded with intense blacks, propose a closed space, full of unexplained. To the contrary «l’écume des jours » open distant horizons. The light is exploding. The rays of daylight splitting here and there the vast nocturne spaces, have metamorphosed into spouting clarity. Large black signs emerging from oceans of freshness, are roaring at the rythm of the rising tide and, like pushed by the waves, brought back to the shore, appear like powerful traces bathed with light.

Between spatiality and solid construction the paintings of Pierre Zufferey are playing with an extreme tension between the energy and the strength invested into the stroke. They give evidence of the vivacity and the agitation of the gesture, but the vast areas moderating the vehement brush strokes, impose to the canvas calmness, instrospection, meditation, also maybe contemplation. The painted fields, altogether strong and fragile, unveil here and there a touch of red, a range of smooth and warm sand, a mark of blue sky, a discreet streaming of tiny little marks translating joys, dreams, desires, secret hopes. These small fragments of ardent and captivant life are participating in the richness, despite the apparent sobriety, of the powerful works of the artist.

An ensemble of works on paper with charcoal, graphite, bituminous lac, walnut cordial and pigments punctuate the set of paintings and underline the original character of the exhibition. A priviledge and a great generosity on the part of the passionate and conquering artist, which powerful work imposes itself with force and seduction.

Originating from the Valais (Switzerland), Pierre Zufferey lives and works in Sierre. After studies of architecture, he decides to dedicate himself to the arts : painting, prints, photography and music, pursuing nevertheless some architectural projects.
Over a hundred of exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad mark out his artistic adventure. In 2012, The Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny will invite him for a large exhibition.
